Mistress Berliner's Dame School
Colonial teachers ran a tight ship. Students had to stand and curtsey or bow to the teacher while saying, "Yes, Mistress Berliner", before they could speak. Teachers expected all the students to be quiet and respectful at all times.
Students studied reading and writing, mostly from the bible or their Horn Books-alphabet primers written on paper and covered with translucent sheets of horn that was sliced thin.
Students who were naughty were often whipped.
Once pupils learned everything there was to learn they were done with school no matter what age!
Students wrote on slate with pieces of soap stone. This is difficult and takes a lot of concentration!
A whipping sounds bad...but there were worse punishments in those days.
